Introducing Louise Abrahams, our new Children’s worker

Louise Abrahams is our new children’s worker at New Life. She has taken over from the wonderful Brenda Hunt who retired at the end of April 2017. Louise is married to Kaiser and they have four children aged 16-28  and a monster dog called Milo. Louise is a primary teacher by profession and has taught in schools in the UK and Ghana. The family were based in Ghana for  8 years, before returning to Croydon two years ago and becoming part of New Life.

How and when did you become a Christian?

I became a Christian when I was 13 but I backslid and came back to the Lord in 1990.  Since then we’ve been involved in two churches. In our church in Ghana we were very involved in family and marriage ministry.

How long have you been involved in working with children?

I’ve worked with children since my secondary school days. I later trained to be a teacher. I’ve managed to fit in teaching around being a mum.

What are your main responsibilities as the children’s worker?

I’m responsible for overseeing all the children’s work at New Life including the Sunday morning Power House, Sunday evening children’s ministry & Going Bananas. I also have some input into Noah’s Ark and New Life Pre-School.

What happens on a Sunday morning in Power House?

There’s an under 5’s programme which includes crèche and the pre-school & reception group and the 5’s-11’s group which includes children in school years 1-6 which meets upstairs in the Upper Room. We have a number of different programmes running which are delivered by teams of adult leaders working along groups of teenagers.  Stephen Bryars, our youthworker also organises a separate programme for school years 7-13.

What’s your vision for children’s ministry at New Life?

I want to see children at New Life on fire for Jesus and filled with the Holy Spirit. I also want to see children and families from our local community coming in and having their lives changed by the love of God.

How can we can help you in your role?

We need more people to VOLUNTEER, especially young adults who have a passion and an excitement for Jesus which they want to share with the upcoming generation. We have a number of children with additional needs who need helpers to support them during our Sunday morning sessions. We also need people who have varying gifts who would love to be involved in smaller short term projects throughout the year. Eg Art, cooking, dance, sport, drama. We also want parents to support what we are doing by talking to their children about what we have been doing and also praying with them.
